The Shire has significant heritage and cultural characteristics and includes many areas of natural environmental significance such as state forest and national parks, including large areas of land under protection as Sydney’s water catchment.

Eastern parts of the Shire are bounded by the cliffs and ravines of the Illawarra escarpment and Morton National Park with some remnant rainforest and heath land. Sydney water catchment reservoirs include Wingecarribee (east of Moss Vale) and Fitzroy Falls (south-east of Moss Vale).
