Dwellings
Applicable to occupied private dwellings.
In the 2001 Census, there were 13727 separate houses (90.8%), 728 semi detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses (4.8%), 386 flats, units
or apartments (2.6%) and 196 other dwellings (1.3%).
Of all occupied private dwellings in the 2001 Census, 11048 were either fully owned or being purchased, which represents (73.1%) of all occupied private dwellings, while 2970 (19.6%) were being rented. This compares with 9387 (71.0%) either fully owned or being purchased and 2925 (22.1%) being rented in the 1996 Census, and 8099 (70.8%) either fully owned or being purchased and 2452 (21.4%) being rented in the 1991 Census.
Footnote: In the 2001 Census, serviced apartments have been included as private dwellings. These dwellings were defined as non-private dwellings in the 1991 and 1996 Censuses. Other dwellings consist of caravans, cabins and houseboats; improvised homes, tents, sleepers out; and house or flat attached to a shop, office etc.
Source: 2001 Census Data : Wingecarribee (A) (Statistical Local Area)Wingecarribee Shire has significantly less villa, flat or apartment housing and much greater separate housing at 90% of occupied private dwellings compared to 70% State wide (2001). By 2011, average household size within the Shire is expected to fall from 2.6 persons per household to 2.5 persons. While Council’s Strategic Plan aims for greater housing diversity to better suit the needs of smaller households, outcomes will not be felt until after the draft Shire wide Local Environment Plan (LEP) becomes effective. In the context of sustaining Wingecarribee Shire’s existing rural amenity and improving ecological sustainability, Council’s Strategic Plan also aims to meet Shire residential housing needs to 2011 and beyond, by increasing housing opportunities and diversity. Of an anticipated 4,590 new housing opportunities some 1,400 will include semi detached, town house, villa, flat and unit accommodation.
These strategies are pending completion of the draft Shire wide Local Environment Plan.
